A tailnet is the private network of devices in your Tailscale account. Connecting joins the Space machine to it. Your phone or laptop is a separate device with its own Tailscale setup.

You need permission to add the Space machine to the tailnet. The machine also needs its operator-provided Tailscale integration. An unavailable card explains when installation or service attention is required.

Connect the machine

  1. Open Your profile → Tailscale → Connect Tailscale.
  2. Choose Log in with Tailscale and complete sign-in in the new tab.
  3. If your tailnet requires device approval, have its administrator approve the machine in the Tailscale admin console.
  4. Return to Space and check the reported connected state.

Cancel connection abandons a pending sign-in. If the card needs installation or service repair, ask the person operating your Space to handle that setup.

Use a device address

When connected, choose Tailnet devices beside + in the composer. You can:

  • click a name or IP address to copy it;
  • drag a device chip into your draft; or
  • use Add to message on a row.

Adding a device inserts its MagicDNS name when available, or its IP address otherwise. It replaces selected text or inserts at the caret. It does not send the message or connect to the device. Review your request before sending.

This machine comes first, followed by online, offline, and expired devices. The list refreshes while open. An expired key can remain listed with its state; being listed does not prove the device is reachable or grant access to a service.

Profile also offers Devices for copying addresses. If clipboard access is unavailable, select the text and copy it normally.

Disconnect

Choose Disconnect and read the confirmation. This logs the Space machine out of Tailscale and can interrupt work using that network. It does not remove the device’s listing from the admin console; manage that listing there separately.

For a connection that stops working, inspect Profile’s actual state before retrying a network operation. Terminal and machine explains how to inspect commands that may already have run.
