Leverage

The essay that names the word: why ground that looks solid and ground that actually bears weight are not the same thing, and what turns one into the other.

Archimedes’ boast was never really about the lever. A rigid bar is the easy part — any stick will do, and the arithmetic has been available since before he said it: force times distance on one side equals load times distance on the other, and you can make that trade as generous as you like just by choosing where the fulcrum sits. The entire claim rides on the other half of the sentence — give me a place to stand — because that part doesn’t exist yet, anywhere you look. Stand on the Earth and push, and you’re standing on the very thing you’re trying to move. The fulcrum has to sit outside the system, or it isn’t a fulcrum. It’s just more of the load.

This is a real engineering problem, not a philosophical one, and it has a real engineering answer, still in daily use on every job site building anything taller than a house: you don’t find a fixed point. You build one. A crane’s outriggers plant piles until they hit a stratum that will hold. A tower doesn’t rest on the dirt beneath it — dirt moves, settles, compresses under weight over years, and can’t be trusted with forty stories — it rests on piles driven down to bedrock, or close enough to it that the difference doesn’t matter. Somebody, at real cost, turned unreliable ground into a fixed point. Everyone who builds on it afterward gets that fixed point for free.

Work That Doesn’t Compound

Without a fixed point, every push happens while standing on the thing you’re trying to move — which is another way of describing most work done with an AI. A prompt in, an output out, and by the next session the ground you were standing on has shifted back to wherever it started, because nothing held your position between pushes. You can push as hard as you like, cycle after cycle, and the honest word for what you’re doing is labor, not leverage. It’s real work. It produces real output. It just doesn’t accumulate, because there’s no fixed point underneath it carrying your position forward from where you stood yesterday to where you need to stand today.

This is easy to miss, because effort and leverage feel identical from inside a single push. Both produce an output; both feel like progress. The difference only shows up in the shape of the curve over time. Labor produces a result roughly proportional to the force you supplied that day. Leverage produces a result that keeps growing on force you supplied months ago, in a different domain entirely, on a problem you’ve since half-forgotten you ever solved.

The Ground You Build

The fixed point, in this version, is a record — kept honest, kept legible, kept connected to the reasons behind it — solid enough that a decision made in one place can bear real weight somewhere else, later, without anyone having to re-derive it. That’s what the pile driven to bedrock is standing in for: not a note, not a file, but something engineered specifically to hold load it wasn’t necessarily built for at the time.

And here is where a foundation stops behaving like a machine and starts behaving like something better. A hydraulic press, once built, presses at exactly the same ratio on its ten-thousandth use as its first — excellent machinery, but flat, forever the same size. A foundation doesn’t stay flat. Pour one section and it isn’t just holding whatever’s standing on it today; it’s permanently joined to the next section poured beside it, and the one after that, and the edge of solid ground creeps outward with every addition, at no cost to what was poured before. The load you’ll need to move next year, in ground you’ve never touched, is already a little closer to solid than it would have been if nothing had been built — not because anyone aimed at that specific future load, but because the ground itself got bigger while you weren’t looking at it. A machine you reuse stays the same size forever. Ground you extend doesn’t.

Ground That Only Looks Solid

Not all ground that looks finished is actually load-bearing, and the difference between the two is invisible right up until something heavy is put on it. San Francisco’s Millennium Tower is a well-documented example: a luxury high-rise whose foundation piles were driven deep into sand and old landfill, but not all the way down to bedrock, the way its neighbors’ piles were. For years it looked like every other building on the skyline — poured, finished, occupied. Then it started sinking, and tilting, by enough that it became a famous, expensive, litigated problem, and the eventual fix was to drive new piles the rest of the way down to the rock that should have held it from the start.

A durable record with nothing actually connected to it — the correct-but-stale file, the doc nobody’s checked against reality in a year, the decision recorded without the reasons that would let someone tell if it still applies — is exactly this kind of ground. It looks like a foundation. It photographs like a foundation. It will hold small, quiet loads for a surprisingly long time, right up until something real is built on it, at which point the gap between looking solid and being solid stops being theoretical. Surviving is not nothing. But surviving isn’t the same as bearing weight, and the only way to tell the difference in advance is to have actually checked what’s underneath.

The Test Is the Unfamiliar Material

You don’t find out whether you built a real foundation or just a good-looking slab until you build on ground you’ve never personally tested.

Anyone can look strong building on a site they already know — that might be geology, not engineering. The real test is the site where the honest expectation is that you should struggle, because you’ve never personally surveyed that ground before. Build the first tower on something you’ve spent years mastering and it stands beautifully — that tells you less than it feels like it should, because you might have been the bedrock the whole time, supplying expertise disguised as foundation. The test that actually separates leverage from expertise is the site you walked into cold, where the record was the only thing that had ever touched the ground before you, and where the same small input — your judgment, your presence, your sense of what matters, none of it specific to that site — held real, working weight anyway. When that happens, something underneath is bearing load that isn’t your own competence. That something is the foundation, not you. Which is the entire point of building one: it means you were never the limiting factor. The ground was.

That deserves the honest caution rather than the implied one. A foundation has no opinion about what gets built on it. It will hold a hospital and a casino with the same indifference, because bearing weight and choosing what deserves to be built are two entirely different jobs, and only one of them is the foundation’s. Put something wrong on excellent ground with total confidence and you get a very stable mistake — sturdier, longer-lived, and more convincing than the mistakes that fall down on their own. The foundation amplifies your judgment. It was never going to provide one. That job stays yours for exactly as long as the ground holds.

Why the Word Earns Itself Back

“Leverage” comes from lever, and for most of its life that’s all it meant — a mechanical fact about bars and fulcrums, nothing you’d need to defend in conversation. It’s only the metaphorical use that got hollowed out: a word that now means “trust me, it multiplied,” used to claim an outcome without showing the fulcrum, the ground it stands on, or the load it actually moved. The suspicion that follows the word around is fair, and it’s correct often enough that the word has mostly stopped meaning anything. It shows up in the same sentence as “unlock” and “solutions,” doing the same job those words do: standing in for a claim nobody has to defend, because nothing about the mechanism was ever named.

It means something specific here, because the mechanism is namable, and naming it is the whole test. A load: whatever unfamiliar problem the force eventually has to move. A fulcrum: the small, human, domain-independent thing you actually supply — judgment, presence, the sense of what matters. And ground underneath the fulcrum, engineered rather than found, extended a little further with every honest record laid into it. Show the three, or don’t use the word. Everything else is just pushing on something that hasn’t been proven to hold, and calling the wobble momentum.


Archimedes assumed he’d only have to find his place to stand once. You don’t get to stop there — you get to keep pouring more of it, and every foot of ground you add makes the next load, wherever it turns out to be, a little closer to solid than it was the day before you started.
